The date was May 24th 2013 when I first met the team at CrossFit Signal Hill. Since that date my life changed in a better direction, both mind and body. A work colleague told me about a gym and invited me for a work out. On the very first day, Phil had me perform a base set of functions that included pull ups. As I was dangling on the bar, he advised me to go ahead and start…my response was that I already did! At that moment I realized that my fitness from younger days had left the building. I’m happy to say that I can now perform real pull-ups; they may not be as pretty as the coaches’ pull-ups with their fancy butterfly techniques, but they are good. I am 40 pounds lighter than when I started. I can now put on socks standing up and can unbuckle my seatbelt with my left hand when in the driver’s seat. These may seem like a small victories, but it’s the simple things in life, and with weight gain, are not simple. I have learned that with consistent effort on working out, whether you are trying to compete or just maintain your cardio, your life outside the gym seems less stressful. With CFSH, if I challenge myself at the box, the work-life balance outside of the gym is easy to handle regardless of the challenge. I have also learned to diet (mostly paleo) consistently, if consistent means good during the week and lots of cheating on the weekends… My favorite thing about CFSH is that the camaraderie among members is always present, whether you attend daily or once every couple weeks. I also enjoy the coaches, as they will assist you with all movements and show great patience even with our 5:45 a.m. class when we don’t pay attention the first time they explain the workout. I would recommend CFSH to people that want to change their gym routines from standing around a normal gym to working as a group with coaches where you can challenge your skills and cardio daily. They refer to CrossFit as functional fitness, and I have realized that this is true when I am moving furniture or working on my house or running with the Border Collies. Fitness really does transfer to everyday active lives.
Phil Sarris, the founder of CFSH, called me up because of our rugby connection and invited me to lose some puddin. I’ve exercised my whole life then quit when I turned 50. I was coaching rugby referees and getting fatter and more out of shape. Since joining CFSH I feel better everyday physically (weigh less, sleep better, clothes fit better) and mentally (because I am doing something about it). I’ve lost 20+ pounds from when I started and have kept it off since. My favorite thing about CFSH is the team atmosphere where everybody supports everyone. My advice to a new member of our family; stay as healthy as possible, live to enjoy your retirement (and keep exercising), be honest with yourself and focus on the long-term benefits, they are worth it!
I initially joined because I was looking to cut some weight, the regular gym routine wasn't working and I was lucky enough to come across CFSH. I was hooked after the first month. CrossFit introduced me to my nemeses, a diet called Paleo. It took me over a year before I gave in to Paleo, and it was only because of a Fitness Challenge that CFSH put on, but the results were what I wanted. I went from roughly 200lbs/18% body fat (BF) down to 180lbs/13% BF in 60 days. Paleo has become part of my daily life, I may not eat 100% Paleo friendly foods, but I try to stick to it 70% of the time. Along with losing weight I have gotten stronger. After my first CrossFit Open 2015, I was ranked 2973rd in the Southern California Region, in 2017 I finished 1542nd in the Region. Improving, learning something new and the encouragement you get from everybody at the gym/competition are my favorite things about CrossFit. I would never of thought that I would be doing Olympic lifts, handstand pushups, butterfly pull-ups, or a muscle up. A goal of mine is to be able to snatch my body weight. My advice for anyone new to CrossFit would be: don't be discouraged, scale as needed and stick to the percentages. It's not as scary as it looks.
My cousin used to be a member of another Crossfit box and she remembered meeting some CFSH members at competitions. So when she heard I was considering joining a CrossFit gym, she recommended CFSH. CFSH has drastically altered my lifestyle. Before I joined, I was very out of shape and found myself breaking a sweat just walking from place to place. I would occasionally workout with some light dumbbells or run, but it was often inconsistently done. Prior to joining CFSH, the last time I really worked out consistently was in high school. After joining, I immediately started enjoying working out again and really appreciated having other people around to push me in workouts. I started to actually eat healthier or at least not pig out as much on junk food. Then in early 2015 it all sort of clicked for me. I began working out 5 times a week, then started eating a lot healthier before finally moving to 8 workouts a week which allowed me to improve my fitness immensely. When I started CrossFit at the end 2013, I weighed 212lbs and was very unhealthy. Today, I weigh 168 lbs., for a grand total of 44 lbs. lost and I’ve maintained it off since. The trainers are definitely my favorite thing about CFSH. Put simply, they're awesome! They're great at pushing people to be better whether it's teaching new movements, giving encouragement during workouts, or working out with us to give us some great competition. I look forward everyday to continuing to improve my strength, technique on the fundamental CrossFit lifts and competing daily with my friends. Don't put off joining! The coaches will teach you how to scale the exercises accordingly; so don't be afraid of not having the fitness to join. Our coaches can scale a workout for anyone!
My brother in law came to visit us from Spain and was in to CrossFit, he found your website and said CFSH is a good one to go to. So I checked it out and the rest is history! CFSH has given me confidence in myself to know that I can push myself to limits I never knew I had before. Going to CFSH is not something I “have” to do, I “want” to do for myself to make me the best I can be. I learned that food is not a reward, but fuel to drive me. What I put into my body, fuels my body to help obtain the results I want. I’ve lost over 60 pounds since joining CFSH and am still going! My short-term goals are to continue to build muscle, get more PRs, and continue leaning out. Long term goals, be the best me I can be, continue to challenge myself and complete a Murph RX!
It's been nearly 7 years of CFSH and I love it! I found out about CrossFit online and then saw Phil move into the location. So I walked up to Phil to say hi. He told me to meet him the next morning at 6:30 am for a workout. And I did. He about killed me with doing 10 six-pound wall balls. I about died actually, but it was then I knew that CrossFit was exactly what I needed. CrossFit has gotten me back to my pre-pregnancy weight, gotten me loads stronger, happier and in love with a thrice a week hobby. I also don't get tired in the afternoons anymore and I sleep way better. And lastly I can do mundane chores much easier because after counting in a CrossFit AMRAP, you can endure anything. I was nearly 200lbs when I started and whittled my way down once I went full paleo to 123 lbs and a size 4. I am still a size 4, but have gained muscle since then. I weigh about 145 lbs now still wearing the same outfits. It's all muscle baby! My advice to a new member of our family; JUST GO! The coaches are great. The members are great. It works and if you are tired of how you are, this regimen is exactly what you need.
I found out about CFSH through a good friend. Since becoming a member I am more focused on my workout regimen as well as my diet. My workouts are more well-rounded and focused on overall improvements. I love being a part of a health-focused community. The results are evident; I have gained muscle and lost inches everywhere! Being part of CFSH is like being part of a family. I love the coaching staff because they focus on us learning the correct techniques and they program a wide variety of workouts. My advice to a new member of our family; give it at least 30 days. It’s so worth it!!
I found CFSH from seeing the banner on the sidewalk of Willow street. CFSH has changed my life dramatically. It's changed the way I look, the way I feel, how I think about long term health, I have new friends and done a ton of new things. It's definitely changed my life for the better, I joined at 215 pounds and now I bounce around 190. I really love how the gym operates. You come in, class starts on time, you warm up, stretch, lift, and do the WOD. It's actually rare to find a gym that runs as well as CFSH. My advice to a new member of our family; trust the process and programming. Don't be scared or discouraged of being sore. Just show up and good things will happen.
